WHAT IS MSPI?

Milk Soy Protein Intolerance or MSPI is irritation of the gastrointestinal tract due to large proteins in milk and soy that are difficult for some infants to digest. These proteins get stuck in the bowel, causing irritation and a fussy baby who sometimes spits up, has diarrhea and sometimes blood in the stool. MSPI is not the same as lactose intolerance or milk allergy as these are uncommon in infants.

Helping a baby with MSPI feel better usually requires a change in moms diet if shes breastfeeding or a change to a predigested formula. Talk with your doctor before changing formula and about any concerns you may have. Be aware that it may take up to 2 weeks for the proteins to be completely eliminated, so be patient! When baby is ready to start solids the order of introducing the solids can be different for the baby with MSPI and your doctor can provide you with the information you may need. The outcome for babies with MSPI is very good, most babies outgrow this intolerance by 12 months of age.
